I am a technology teacher at a science and technology magnet middle school in an urban area in South Carolina. The majority of the student population are minorities (55% African American, 6% Hispanic, 1% Other.) At this time, 56% of our student body qualifies for free/reduced lunch. Our school has implemented a strict dress code to reduce the influence of gang-related activity that permeates the surrounding neighborhoods.

Our school can only provide the basic supplies for our technology classes. Podcasting is a new curriculum implemented in our school this year. Each student has access to a computer at their workstation in my classroom. The audio quality is poor and inadequate for publication on the Internet. My classes have been asked to produce podcasts of lessons and book reviews by other classroom teachers and our media specialist. The current equipment does not allow a quality production to be used by the students and teachers at our school.

With this resource, a Firewire Podcasting Kit, I expect my students to be able to produce work that the school as a whole can use in a cross-curriculum environment. We plan to post these podcasts on teacher websites to provide tutoring to students who need additional help or who have been absent during classroom instruction.

With this added technology, I expect my students to begin "creating" work and not just "repeating an assignment" demonstrated in class. Students will be empowered to develop curricular resources to benefit the entire school and have ownership of the finished product. This exposure will give my students confidence and skills to advance their success in high school and beyond.
