My students need 5 copies of 10 different award winning books to participate in Literature Circles in my 6th grade classroom. This will allow my students to have choice based on genre, presonal preference, and be excited about the book they are going to explore and read together in small study groups.
I teach 6th grade Language Arts. It is very hard to find books that engage and entice our students, particularly boys, in to wanting to read. As we explore the literary elements this next year, I would like to be able to use novels and literature circles to engage students in discussions, predictions, and reading. The selected titles are Caudill Award 2009 Nominees. I was careful to select ones that would engage both boys and girls. My students love to read novels but the ones in our school are very outdated or have been read over and over again.
We can use these books multiple times in the classroom as we rotate books within the circles. I am excited about this and know my students will be as well! My community is very diverse with a range of reading abilities as well as learning abilities. Literature Circles will be a great way to add to our classroom environment and learn in a cooperative setting.
We have limited funding being from a large city. There are over 1000 students in our school. Sixth grade students come to our school eager to go to the big Library, but are often frustrated when the books are checked out. Our library has an incentive all year to read every Caudill book. By having 10 of these in my classroom (out of 20 titles), my students will have a great start to reaching their goals and be excited about reading once again!
We will use Literature Circles all year in order to rotate the groups through all of the books. We just need the books- the students and the teacher will provide the rest!
Reading interest in junior high schools dramatically decreases from grade school as there is less time to read for enjoyment and more time spent in nonfiction (texts). These titles and Literature Circles will allow students to converse about the books they are reading as well as read for enjoyment and "Dive in to a good book"!
