So many stars just waiting to be discovered live up in the woods in Maine. My students -- usually about 85 a year -- are sometimes already working in those woods by 9th grade. They know an education is important for a good job, but there are almost no good jobs for many miles around and it's hard to visualize a good job earned through education for themselves. Most have never traveled; the cultures and lands we travel to over the course of a year in Ancient World Studies seems as remote to them as Mars sometimes. Except for one thing -- the History Channel and shows like it, and video games based on history, bring some of the personalities from the past alive.

My students come from an entertainment culture, and tapping their creative potential as writers, actors and film makers is what I aim to do. Their rich visual experience often seems to stop at the door of school, and their interest in technology, digital images and music isn't often leveraged to support education because of a lack of equipment to make this happen.

With a video camera and sturdy tripod we could use the iBook laptops at our school to make movies based on historical situations, complete with exciting plots and authentic cultural details. The students could download music and add that to help express their understanding of the information uncovered during research about ancient times. They could create their own plays, or use good historical plays written for high school. They could also share the DVDs with their families, friends, and the larger community (such as showing a clip over the morning announcements video broadcast). DVDs can be an important bridge to homes where parents may not be able or willing to come to school and view their children's work. And the ownership of creating something that can be shared in this way would support self-esteem by creating opportunities for teens to experience autonomy, often sadly lacking under the system of compulsory education en mass.

I can't wait to share the videos we produce with the donor lucky enough to see the potential in this project. A new generation of stars is waiting to be born -- please help make it happen.
