Gliders, sailplanes, they are wonderful flying machines. It's the closest you can come to being a bird. — Neil Armstrong I am a technology instructor to low income, inner city students. I would like to introduce my students to more problem based learning.

I am currently teaching in a computer lab where the "norms" have been set by many teachers as just a place to teach MS Office. Being a Technology Education teacher, I would like to introduce many more science based problems and use technology, science and math to solve those problems. I am in the midst of setting up various units in which students will focus on various forms of technology, problems within that technology and learn how to understand those problems.

In this first unit I plan on exploring flight. The unit will start off with a simple paper airplane project to engage the students. We will then move to the exploration of flight - what effects flight and how do we defy gravity. After several classes of research and exploration, students will begin to create their final flight device which will need to transport an egg. This device will be designed and constructed by the students from a predetermined amount of foam board, tissue paper, tape, rubber bands, paper and hot glue.

During my years as a teacher, I have found more and more that students are losing their ability to use their imagination. Federal and state tests have become so frequent that it is almost impossible for teachers to explore outside the normal test driven activities. I feel that one of the easiest places for this to be accomplished is in the technology education classes.
