Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work as an elementary school counselor in a high-need area in Pennsylvania. Our student population is highly diverse with 18% of our students speaking English as a second language. In addition, we have a highly transient population. Many of our students move in & out of our school throughout the year. Our neighborhood has been struck by violence as well. Hearing gunshots at night has become a commonplace.

Due to the transient population, the diverse racial and ethnic population, and the language differences among our families; it has been difficult to build bridges between our community groups. We struggle to help our students learn more productive ways to handle their conflicts.

This year our fifth grade students have begun a project to share their stories through literature and art. They have shared stories and have begun building life-size puppets. Our hope is that they will culminate this project with a parade through our neighborhood. We hope that by demonstrating to our families how we can be peacefully work together, we will begin to build cohesiveness in our community. To do this we need more paint, brushes, and fabric paper. We have been using donations of paints and supplies, but unfortunately our supplies have been depleted.
