“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” ~Jimmy Johnson We are a fifth grade class in a Philadelphia inner-city school. In my class, which fluctuates around 33 children, 87% of the students read at least two years below grade level, approximately 93% live at or below the poverty level, 20% live in foster care, and 4% live in a local shelter. The items we need are dictionaries that are appropriate for 5th grade students, encyclopedias on DVD, and fictional books for our literature circles . Until four years ago, our school was K – 4th grade. Today it is Pre-K through 8th grade, due to closure of a local middle school. The dictionaries provided by the school were intended to be used by younger children and are therefore too limited in their content for my students. While my students’ reading levels are lower than their grade level, we work hard every day on increasing their academic levels. Having dictionaries that contain the vocabulary words being introduced to my students would be a much-needed addition to our class’s success. Furthermore, new, expanded dictionaries will broaden my students’ written vocabulary and enable them to further develop their writing skills. As for encyclopedias, we have none at all. I am therefore asking for an encyclopedia on CD so I can show my entire class its contents—I have purchased, with my own money, a converter box so I can show information that is on my laptop on a television screen. Since seeing is believing and my students have limited resources to see and experience the world they live in outside of their immediate community, I want to be able to bring it to them. It is my hope that my students will become more enthusiastic about their research projects, and that this will improve their research, reading, writing, and reference skills, as well as enabling them to develop a more meaningful understanding of what is being discussed or read about. So, if you should come across this proposal, our class would greatly appreciate your help. We appreciate your consideration, time, and financial support. We know you can donate to any class you wish but we hope you choose us. If you do choose us, you will have given, not just to this year’s class but to those still to come, thus giving 100’s of inner-city kids tools they need to believe in themselves and to reach their full potential. You will have been a part of our success and for that we are truly grateful.
