Hello-I am a speech-language pathologist in an integrated public school preschool program. My students encompass a variety of challenges in cognition, communication, play and social interactions. Currently, 33% of my caseload involves students who are diagnosed with some form of autism spectrum disorder, ranging from mild to severe. It is well documented in research that use of visual aids (picture, icons, photographs, drawings) assists students with autism and other disabilities with understanding the world around them and learning how to interact with the world. What I want to do is use a higher level visual teaching strategy and take my technology skills one step further by using video clips and creating movies. I have been aware of Videomodeling as an intervention for several years but have not pursued it, mostly due to the time involved in setting up and using outdated equipment. But it is now time to move forward. Videomodeling entails making short videos of how to teach a child a skill that is difficult for him or her. It may be something as simple as teaching the emotions of sad, happy or how to play with a doll or train. It could be showing the child the process of holding a marker and putting markings on paper as a means of written expression. For higher level children, the videos may demonstrate how to interact with friends. The videos are generally child specific and geared towards a specific skill. My attempts with our old equipment have been time consuming and frustrating. My program has video equipment purchased through a grant about 10 years ago. Back then this camera was fantastic. Now, not so much. Some batteries hold a charge for 10 minutes. Others don't charge at all. Recording is on small cassettes which then have to be transferred to a special video sized cassette and then watched on a TV with a VCR or via the camera. Using (or trying to use) outdated and non-functioning equipment has wasted too much of my time. This teaching tool is also a method to demonstrate progress to families. Capturing moments of new skills or skills not yet observed at home is powerful. Using the Internet these videos can be viewed easily by families, friends, other teachers, etc. One part of the plan is to upload the videos to Voice Thread which is an on line media album. It can hold images, and videos. The site is dedicated to sharing, and storytelling. The wonderful thing about this web site is the interactive capability. Others can share, edit and comment through a variety of media. So Donors, I am looking to get a small, portable video camcorder, called the Flip. This device is unobtrusive and can be carried easily. Battery operated with no major cords to plug in and trip over. Simple to use, and upload. I have a colleague who has been successfully using hers across environments in the school and uploading them for teachers and families to view. I would like to provide this wonderful experience for my students as well. Technology continues to amaze me with what we can do for children and families. I hope you will consider helping.
