Puppets Still Have A Purpose

My students need one set of alphabet puppets and story telling puppets to enhance and strengthen their academic learning. My students also need two new sets of community worker puppets and multicultural kid puppets to express feelings and grow socially. One puppet stage is needed for students to use and express learning personally and academically through the use of the classroom puppets.

Mrs. C. Odyssey Academy Webster
Webster, TX Grades PreK-2

Do you remember gathering friends and putting on plays and performing as the next up coming band? Do you remember your favorite teddy and using that toy to express your feelings and bring comfort when you were alone. These memories and learning make lasting impacts and learning in a child's development. I am an all day pre-K teacher at a charter school. My classroom has a range from 3 to 5 year olds full of diversity and all inclusive. My students range from ESL to students with learning challenges. My school is a small school with limited funding available.

Some of the most important skills you create in school are your social skills. As a small child, you cannot speak fluently and you find it hard to use the correct way to express your feelings. You are learning to make friends and be away from you parents for a long length of time. Some of you are learning English as you come to school and facing the challenge of learning a new language and trying to socialize with peers. My students have found puppets as a way of expressing their thoughts, feelings and creativity. Many of my students may not know how to answer a question from the teacher but if you hand them a stuffed animal or puppet there is an instant comfort and security in place. My students have also begun to take a shelf or anything that forms a wall and create puppet shows. The puppet shows have brought students together and formed social relationships. Students who would not normally play in dramatic play participate in setting up chairs and acting as ticket holders for class puppet shows.

I am asking for classroom puppets and a puppet stage my students would all be able to use. I am in need of academic learning puppets and puppets to teach nursery rhymes which strength vocabulary and linguistic skills. In the technology age we are in, puppets seem prehistoric, but do have a purpose. In a world that is faced with challenges facing students at young ages, social development is of upmost importance to be gained at a young age. Puppets provide a safe place for students to grow socially, academically and personally.

By funding our proposal you will make it possible for students of the technology age to gain the strong social development we gained through our dramatic play with dolls and action figures as young students. You can help students who cannot express the way they feel verbally and allow them the chance to participate as a member of the class and create a social link between home and school during their first experiences of school.
