Putting Poetry in the Hands of Students

My students need these 21 contemporary poetry books.

Students actually love poetry, that is if you can give them poetry that they can connect to their own lives. To do this we need contemporary poetry along with the classics to inspire them to read and write poetry. I am the librarian at a public middle school, grades 6-8, in Maine. Our students are a mix of economic, social and racial backgrounds. We want to show them how inspiring, rewarding and fun poetry can be.

Our school budget was frozen in January 2008 and we want to be able to celebrate poetry during the last two weeks of April which is National Poetry Month. We need poetry books. Our collection of poetry books in the library is small, tattered, and old. I have four teachers who have great poetry projects planned and their students need poetry books in their hands that will inspire them. We, of course, will use the classics but students need to see poetry written for teenagers by contemporary poets too.

I have found 21 excellent poetry books. The variety of these books reflects the projects that students will be working on including: poems about the Earth, teenagers, American history, heroes, and sports as well as poems in different forms. These books, guided by teachers and me, will enable students to study poetry terms, immerse themselves in great poetry, collect favorite poems in poetry notebooks and, with this background, write their own poetry. We will be turning the library into a “Coffee House” for a day when students will read their own poems as well as their favorite poems written by others. The audience will be other students and parents.

I know students are going to be inspired if we can put exciting, new poetry books into their hands. They have no idea of the world of contemporary poetry that is out there. It is with your support that we can introduce our students to poetry that could possibly change their lives.
