I am a seventh- and eighth-grade Social Studies teacher at John C. Haines Elementary School, an urban school located on the south side of Chicago. My classroom is in desperate need of Chicago history resources, so I am asking for a grant to purchase five copies of The Encyclopedia of Chicago. My students live in the city, but have surprisingly little knowledge of their city's history. In response to this problem, our school recently adopted a Chicago History Fair program where students research different topics in Chicago history based on their interests. Unfortunately, however, due to the school's limited Chicago history resources, it has been very difficult for students to choose interesting topics and get started on their projects. Just this past summer, the Newberry Library published an outstanding resource entitled The Encyclopedia of Chicago. With five copies of this book in my classroom, students will be able to work in groups to research literally hundreds of topics in Chicago history. Furthermore, each entry in the encyclopedia has a "Further Reading" section which will direct the students out of the classroom into libraries around the city. Five copies of The Encyclopedia of Chicago will provide an incredible learning opportunity for the students of Haines. They will learn valuable research skills as well as a wealth of information about Chicago's history. Furthermore, in addition to the 130 students I serve, there are four other teachers at Haines whose students participate in the Chicago History Fair project and who would have access to the encyclopedias.
