The SharkE's of Painter Elementary (4-5 combo) are doing research on technology and the environment. Our goal is to complete a well-rounded purpose center that really does have purpose! The project the students have decided that they would like to start is an in-classroom tree nursery that promotes technology use and lessens the mortality rate of the trees grown in the classroom. The proposed outcome is to plant the trees at our school first because we have very few and are in need of trees. Later, we will visit local parks and neighborhoods and plant trees as the trees are ready for transplanting. The benefits will be numerous. Students will learn about the environment, issues of mortality, and community involvement as well as how to be caregivers. For this project, we need a smaller yet high quality hydroponics system that will get the trees off to a good start. We also need the products necessary for a hydroponics system, such as the soil and nutrients. Finally, we need trees! Some of my students live next to the school so they can deep water the trees this summer.
