If you were struggling to read, wouldn't you rather listen to a book on a CD instead of spending all of reading time sounding out each and every word? I teach 1st graders in NC. My class is a very mixed ability group with some very low readers and some very high readers. Some students have a lot of support from home, while others receive very little.

I have many students that are struggling to read. I teach using centers, but I have some students who cannot read on their own, so it's hard for them to read when they are in a group on their own. They rotate through centers, and they get small group instruction with me during reading, but they are also given an assignment to work on their own during reading as well. This ensures that every student gets some time to work in a small group with me every day. The main problem is when they go to a different center, they can't read a book on their own if they can't sound out the words. They can sound out some of the words, but they really struggle with reading and understanding the story if they are spending the majority of the time sounding out words.

We need a listening center where I can have a book on CD and headphones for them to listen to the story. They can follow along with their book and point to the words, which will help them build their reading fluency and sight word vocabulary. It will also empower them to read without asking for help, so it will build their self-esteem. Our textbooks came with a CD of the book, so all I need is a listening center to use the CD's so that the CD's will benefit my students. The students would just have to start the CD, turn on their headphones, and listen as the story is read to them. They would be using their "magic pointer fingers" to point to each word as it is read to them. After listening to the story several times at the beginning of the week, then they would be able to read it on their own. Since the story would be more familiar to them, they would be able to read it without stopping to sound out the words.
