They Want To See What I'm Showing Them

My students need an assortment of electronic hardware components, including a DVD/VCR combo and assorted wires and cables, to make their classroom a multimedia experience.

I teach English Language Arts to tenth and twelfth grade students at a public vocational High School in Buffalo, New York.

In my English classes I try to engage the students by playing towards their interests and shared experiences. While it's not too often that they're interested in writing an essay, or that they've all read the same book on their own, they do have very similar and meaningful experiences with other forms of media. Television, film, and Internet content are these children's major sources of entertainment and information. Because these forms interest them so much, I try to use them in my classroom as often as possible to help prove a point, or raise discussion, or show a modern take on an old piece of literature. Students trust TV more than the written word, and if they see something we've done in class in one of these newer formats, it makes it suddenly relevant to them. Circumstances sometimes make this use of media difficult. I have classes that average 35 students, and if I show a video it's on a single 32" Television, connected to an extremely old VCR and my home DVD player which I bring in when I want to show a film. And while there's a world of great internet content out there, Youtube alone is full of useful clips, getting 35 students to crowd around my desktop monitor is impossible.

I would like to set up a much more video-friendly room to help my large classes get full enjoyment and educational value of the visual content I show. Using the items listed in this proposal I would add an additional television set (that I supply) which I would use in conjunction with my existing set making it easier for my students to see. These sets would run from a combined VCR/DVD unit, as well as from my desktop computer via a special adapter designed for that purpose. In this way my class can view VHS, DVD, and online content in a much less cramped fashion. Computer tutorials and PowerPoint notes could be given through the sets as well , further aiding in student learning.

Your help will keep students interested in their studies by making it easier to present to them the kind of materials they connect with.
