Hi there, I teach 9th grade English at a comprehensive high school in Philadelphia, PA, which serves the Latino and African-American community. Many of my students are from households where English is the secondary language. Most of my students live in or near poverty. I am attempting to bring my students into the current century, technology-wise, and simultaneously teach the Philadelphia Core Curriculum in exciting ways. My students need to be educated using a variety of audio-visual media. My first step will be to provide them with interesting presentations, that involve sound, images, motion, music, graphics, as well as good old-fashioned words. Even though our school is out of money, I was able to acquire an LCD projector through donors from DonorsChoose.org. However, due to a recent and terrible attack at our school, I have to request additional help: In the attack, my team lost several computers. The one I use for my multimedia assignments now is missing several keys from its keyboard, and the screen only works periodically. It will connect to the projector, but it quits after two or three minutes. My students call it a "ghetto computer," and are disappointed when I have to end the presentation. While it is true that two of our students were responsible for the destruction, the overwhelming opinion of our students is that the vandalism was truly disgusting. 99% of our kids are great kids, who take their education seriously. Many of their parents are recent immigrants, who know the value of education. Please help close the technological divide, and give these underprivileged high school kids a chance to succeed in a competitive world. My classroom update primarily requires this one item - a replacement computer for our mobile multimedia center.
