As a Resource Specialist, I teach 31 1st-5th grade students throughout the day who struggle with oral decoding and reading fluency. Eighteen students are English language learners who do not have an English speaking parent at home. Eight students have dyslexia. Reading at home without an English speaker or struggling to read creates stress for many of the students, therefore they tend to not want to read for pleasure.
Taking home a book on cassette will allow students to enjoy the adventure of reading independently. Also, students will be able to record their books on tape on their daily reading log. Unfortunately, students are currently not able to meet this class requirement and therefore are receiving N's (needs improvement) for homework on their report cards. Your kind donation of books on tape will enable students to enjoy the pleasure of reading at home and to successfully meet their daily outside reading requirement. For students who are frustrated with reading due to dyslexia, read-alongs will allow them to enjoy listening to an exciting story while tracking words they may not be able to read independently.
I would like to have a daily check-out system in my class library. I have recently received a donation of vinyl book bags and now I need someone to help me fill them with read-alongs. Lakeshore Learning Materials offers a wonderful selection of read-alongs. In this request, I am asking for the Children's Literature Read-Alongs Sets 1, 2, 3, 4, and the Multicultural Read-Alongs. The read-alongs will also be used at the class listening center during the after-school homework intervention program I provide for both at-risk 1st and 2nd graders as well as many of my resource students. Thank you for your support!
