Mr. J. Clawson Elementary School
Clawson, MI Grades 3-5

Who we are: We are a fourth grade class in a small community, only two square miles in size. Currently I have 27 great students that love using technology wherever possible. Our school is a unique learning environment; we are embracing every student’s learning style and unique needs in order for them to succeed. We are involved in several ongoing professional development programs centered on improving academic and social outcomes for our students and community. Last year, we were a pilot school in the UDL-STELA (Universal Design for Learning-Strategies and Tools to Enhance Learning for All) program, representing the county’s intermediate school district. The UDL-STELA program provided strategies and tools to ensure every student has the foundations for success. Six teachers went through the UDL-STELA program and shared those strategies with their colleagues, and the School Board. Our vision: Through our continuing efforts, our professional development and implementation from UDL-STELA and my graduate studies in Educational Technology, we have implemented podcasts, ePal accounts and wikis as collaborative learning tools. These basic tools embrace the Web 2.0 concept, having our students create and contribute to the Internet, not simply using it as another resource. They are creating their own corner of the Internet. Through UDL-STELA, our students have begun to produce their own podcasts and real world products such as a radio advertisement and a tri-fold brochure instead of the traditional multiple page, state report. These products are real world products and not an educational construct. In order for Universal Design for Instruction to truly address the potential of our students, they must be given the tools and instruction to truly express what they have learned, at their optimum level of engagement. This is where your help is so very vital. Through the UDL-STELA program student engagement and comprehension has increased. Students are given multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression with UDL. When students are engaged during instruction and practice by interactive, thought provoking lessons, the quality of their products increase. The freedom to choose how they will demonstrate what they have learned is crucial to sustained engagement and substantive learning. What we need to succeed: Your generosity in helping us to acquire a Mac Mini will make higher order thinking possible, realizing the potential of UDL-STELA. As a result, you will help raise our student’s engagement and outcomes. This higher order engagement will transfer to parents and the community, by embracing the Web 2.0 concept and the use of authentic assessments, when they view the student work on the wiki. Community collaboration is the end result of full implementation, whereby students create their own quality means of assessment, post it online and everyone can partake in the educational experience. These positive and academically based projects showcase the students learning, while using the Internet in a safe and appropriate manner. Up to now we have relied on my personal Mac notebook, to record and produce the features that my students have created. This dependence on a single machine can be time consuming and hampers efficient product creation. Having multiple machines, equipped with Garageband, iMovie, and iPhoto would dramatically increase our learning outcomes as we have multiple collaborative groups working simultaneously. How you can help make our vision a reality: The Mac Mini you donate will allow students to create their own podcasts in Garageband, convert it to an MP3 with iTunes and then insert them to our class wiki via Gcast. These podcasts will take the form of the narration of classroom content, to advertisements, or any other student chosen expression of content. Videocasts can be created using the software in iLife. Your generosity will have a direct effect in helping students take a more active role in their own learning, while teaching them skills they will need to be successful in the 21st century. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
