I am a theater teacher at Busbee Creative Arts Academy, a low-income middle school serving grades 6-8.

I recently completed a design unit with my 7th grade theater students. The students were able to create scaled designs and models based on a piece of dramatic literature. The classes have since expressed a desire to put their design experience to a "real world" test. The class project would be for the students to design, and then graph/paint several backdrops for the spring musical, Mulan Jr.

I was able to come up with large set pieces on which to display the backgrounds, but still need the paint and fabric to complete the project. The students are very energized and would take great pride in the project (it would be used as the backdrop in the spring musical, which is seen by the entire student body!). The project would also incorporate history, science, and math as students would complete research on the time period of Ancient China, the land, and graph the design to scale.

If funded, this will be the first time our school play has had a background! You will make it possible for my students to expand on their design knowledge in a truly meaningful way that also integrates core subjects into the arts.
