Critical Computer Clarity

My students need a LCD projector and 9 USB flash drives.

This project expired on May 1, 2009.

Here in Southwest Michigan, my fifth grade classroom has a theme, we are the Calculating Citizens because in this grade we study math, American History and core democratic values. We are focused on planning for our future as amazing citizens. They are very excited about learning about our country through the myriad of projects I have planned for them. Alas, these citizens are very limited in using technology. So, my class has enthusiastically overwhelmed me with the desire to do more internet based research but, I am at square one because without a LCD Projector or computer lab, it will take months to get them all prepared to work on there group and individual multi-media projects. Even though, this part of the state is undergoing the worst economic crisis in the country, our ESL and general education students are persevering with optimism. We have a 90% free breakfast, lunch program and need bilingual support.

Many of my Calculating Citizens are immigrant students with language barriers, so technology can be used to enhance their cognitive development. My students like many are interested in computers and technology but sadly there are few resources available. Some students don't know how to surf the net or turn the computer on. Technology is an essential part of modern education that I want to improve in the lives of my students. Our class was discussing there role as active participates in society when they decided that they wanted to be prepared to find resources to make there classroom better. We have ancient (5-6 years old) computers from another school that received new computers. So, they are grateful for these computers but, unfortunately, many of my students are unable to adequately surf the net for research and none of them can use power point. Without a computer lab or assistant, my students are ill prepared technologically because of this lack of resource.

These Calculating Citizens will embark on a Internet journey into the past and there future through technology. The students will learn how to use the equipment and I can better direct their technology education with integrated projects using graphics and multi-media. THe flash drives will add in storage challenges on these antiquated computers and reinforce the importance of editing and revising. Students will work cooperatively and independently documenting their personal development. Students will create power point projects, visual aids, and experiment documentation in various formats. They will make projects using multi-media that they have created and that I can assess for students with a diversity of talents.

Fellow citizens, let's open the doors of this technological journey for my Calculating Citizens. This is an opportunity to invest and guide a generation of new citizens. Each child will benefit from these resources in an exponential fashion because they will take ownership of their own learning and progress. Your contribution will "bridge the digital divide" that currently exists in our educational system. There may be a future scientist, mathematician, inventor, writer or better equipped citizen sitting in my class but, without your help their potential may never be magnified. Please assist me to begin to build the bridges that technology can extend to traditional education. Help these Calculating Citizens surf across the Internet divide and into our nation with a new vision of with digital clarity.
