Aviation: The Physics of Flight

My students need a flight and rocketry kit, pipets, a flight DVD and stopwatches.

I teach 6th and 8th grade science. I also teach an 8th grade Aerospace class. We are a NASA Explorer School and strive to use Aerospace as a tool to engage students in sciene and math.

My Aerospace students are anxious to study the physics of flight. We will use gliders to rockets and everything in between! However, budget cuts in our district are impacting our ability to purchase supplies.

When students are enagaged in hands-on activities, learning really takes off! The Aerospace investigations will allow my students to soar to infinity and beyond. We need a flight and rocketry kit, pipets, and stopwatches in order to study the physics of flight. Students will explore the fundamentals of flight by assembling and experimenting with a hangar full of flying machines. Before they "take off," students investigate the properties of air, especially that air exerts pressure. Then they build parachutes, kites, and hot-air balloons to demonstrate air resistance, wind speed and angle, and lighter-than-air flight. Paper airplane trials prove that shape determines flight path and duration. Next, students discover how the airfoil design of both fixed wings and helicopter rotors creates lift. They construct propeller-driven and simulated jet vehicles to explore plane power, and they learn to control flight by adding ailerons, elevators, and rudders to gliders. Students cap off the unit by building and launching fuel-powered model rockets.

You can support the next generation of Aerospace experts! My students will be future pilots, communications experts, rocket scientists, and engineers. They are ready to engage in high-level investigations of flight.
