Located less than a mile from the shore of Lake Michigan, Louisa May Alcott School is an inner city Chicago Public School which prides itself on involving students in innovative projects. The Middle School wing of Alcott is comprised of approximately 110 students in grades 7-8. We engage students in hands on, inquiry based real world activities that promote problem solving skills, engaged learning, positive self esteem and the development of ecologically aware citizens. This year, Alcott Middle School students are working on water quality and the refurbishment of a local Chicago Pond.
Using the Lincoln Park Zoo's South Pond as the focal point of our investigation, students will work with zoo officials, DePaul University, the Chicago Architectural Foundation and engineers to identify ecological stressors and pollution concerns within the pond and surrounding ecosystems. Students will conduct a series of laboratory investigations to determine the effects of the stressors/pollution on micro and macro organisms, pH, dissolved oxygen, and water quality. Students will then meet with a barrage of scientists to plan a course of action for cleaning the pond as well as planning for the future maintenance of pond life. Students will be involved in all aspects of the pond regeneration from initial meetings with zoo officials to meeting with engineering companies, landscape designers and architects to develop recommendations for refurbishing the pond and its ecosystem. Students will then present their findings and recommendations to Lincoln Park Zoo officials.
Currently, we are in need of pH paper, thermometers and a dissolved oxygen test kit in order to perform our laboratory investigations.
