I teach a third grade inclusion class. Our school, PS/IS 323 is located in Brownsville. More than 90% of our children receive a free lunch. My co-teacher and I are very excited to be instructing our students. Unfortunately, both our regular and special education students are not performing on grade level. A lot of our students have a hard time getting their ideas on paper because they struggle with the mechanics of writing, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and motor skills. All of our students can tell us verbally what they want to write about, but when we read what they eventually wrote, it is entirely different. They do this because they struggle with the words, and ultimately decide to they change their answer to make it easier to get on paper. We are asking for the donation of tape recorders so that we can ask our students to record their thoughts and ideas. This way we can provide them with a tool that will enable them to stick with their idea by providing more time to write the information. It will also allow them to have a record of their positive communication. This will also help us in assessing what they have learned, as we often do not have the resources to provide all the children with our ears, or to recall the facts for each child. Tape recorders will bridge the communication gap between the students, teachers, and administration who our children to be able to write three full paragraphs about different subjects. The funding of these recorders will help 15 students, who are in great need of expressing themselves, feel that their true voices are being heard. Let us help make them literate and eloquent writers. Everyone's voice should be heard.
