WE WANT TO BECOME INTIMATELY CONNECTED WITH OUR MICROBES! My school is a rural school that serves approximately 2000 students, of which roughly 50% receive free or reduced fee lunches. We are one of the few high school microbiology programs in the state of SC. My classes consist of a mix of students, from the tech-prep level to the honors level. This class exposes students to the everyday aspects of microbiology: disease and its prevention, proper hygiene, food preparation and storage, environmental microbiology, and much more! It is a wonderful course that the students say benefits them greatly, as is evidenced by its popularity.

I am in great need of 3 dedicated oil-immersion microscopes for use ONLY in the microbiology classes (I teach 3 classes of 25 students and another teacher teaches 1 class of 25). Microscopes are the very lifeblood of a microbiology class, since everything we look at is microscopic. Currently, we are forced to share the microscopes with 10 biology classes in this school, so they are frequently not available when we need them, which limits the number of labs we would like to do. This negatively impacts the quality of instruction. A picture is never as good as seeing the real thing! Because this is a class for everyone, not just potential science majors, the more the students are exposed to this important material the better for the students!

I am asking for three normal compound microscopes with oil-immersion lenses to be used by all microbiology classes. This will benefit our students directly by allowing them to use the microscopes on a regular basis, as needed. This is a resource that will be used for years to come!

These microscopes will help introduce the students to many microbes (bacteria, protists, and fungi) that they will hear about as adults, and thus broaden their understanding of the microscopic world and how it affects mankind!
