Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Last year my proposal for audio books, which was written with hopes of inspiring students with learning differences to READ, READ, READ, was funded!!! To my surprise and delight, students with all levels of reading abilities flocked to the library to check out the audio books. You would have thought we were selling PS3s or Wii or Xbox 360. There was a line and even a waiting list. These books seemed to quench a deep thirst in our children. The words flowed over their brains like water falling from above. Depending on the book, they might experience a gentle shower, giant stinging drops, horizontal rain, or even hail. Whatever it may be the kids are left satisfied, yet wanting another unique sensation. The majority, want to share the experience with other students by recommending the audio book to their peers. Some students stop me in the hallways to share the wonders of what they just heard. Others just pop into my classroom to give me an update or let me know they just finished a book and I really need to read it. Unfortunately there is a down side. We have over 275 students enrolled in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and only 19 audio books. If you do the math you will see the problem. 275 is far greater than 19. GOOD NEWS!!! You can help balance this equation. Please fund this proposal and expand our audio book section in the library. I have included my original proposal in hopes of answering any questions you may have. Thanks in advance! Original proposal - IN THE STICKS. I am the Title 1 Language Arts and Dyslexia teacher for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Our school is located in rural Texas with many economic and educational needs. Many of our students receive free or reduced lunches and a large percentage of our population has limited English language skills. A JALOPY WITH A FERRARI ENGINE ENTERED IN THE INDY 500. This should give you an idea of the frustration my students feel in school. These kids have wonderful, bumpy brains that are ready to go, just like a Ferrari engine. Unfortunately, because of circumstances beyond their control, they have limited decoding and fluency skills (jalopy body). The TAKS test is the Indy 500 of the educational world in Texas. If you do not pass the test, you do not get promoted. When the jalopy is forced down the track by the high powered engine the car body will begin to fall apart. Reading comprehension also begins to fall apart when pushed beyond the decoding and fluency limits of a student. My goal is to restore the reading skills while maintaining the intellectual ability. BOOT CAMP. As with the military, I must bring the students back to the bare bones of reading. This way I can build up their decoding, fluency, comprehension and self-esteem. Self-esteem is very tricky because as the students begin to gain skills, they check out books that are on their independent reading level. This often inspires their peers to make snide comments about "baby" books. No matter how much improvement has been made, it is heart-wrenching to see adult sized boys with first grade books hidden in their binders. I can only equate the feeling to middle school gym class and the embarrassment of dressing out....you know that feeling. This is where my proposal could make a difference. If the students were provided with audio books at their interest level, not their reading level, it could help them several ways. First, students would be bathed in the English language. They would hear and see the words to help make a connection with print and spoken language. Students could hear the difference between laughter and daughter; comb, tomb, and bomb. Second, skills that have been taught in class could be reinforced through the use of the audio books. Students could read books without fear of losing comprehension due to poor decoding and the fact that they read at a snail's pace. Third, self-esteem would improve because these students would be reading books that suit their intellectual ability while still working on their reading deficits. During DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) students would not be embarrassed by their reading material. They could just quietly slip on the headphones and be transported to another world. JUST DO IT!!! You should follow the trusted advice of Nike....Just DO IT! Just donate audio books today. Maybe you have a favorite book you remember from elementary school but don't see it on the list. No problem. Just donate it. We're not picky or greedy. The kids will appreciate any quality literature. REMEMBER - the goal is to expose "at risk" elementary students to quality, appropriate books. Don't let the Ferrari engine go to waste while we restore the body - JUST DONATE TODAY and SAVE A BRAIN!!
