I am a fourth grade teacher at P.S. 137 in Brownsville. Our school is in danger of failing and approximately 97% of the students receive free lunch. My goal for the upcoming school year is to instill an excitement in my students to read. I want them to enjoy reading and challenge themselves to read new books. I strive each year to create a positive learning environment. Last year my students loved moving from center to center. It allowed them to learn independently as well as in groups. This year I have turned my classroom into a room full of learning centers: math, reading, writing, and computer. These centers enable students to take learning into their own hands. One very important center that my classroom is lacking is the listening center. A listening center enables students to listen to books on tape and encourages them to read. They can share a good book with a friend and listen and read along together or in groups. This also encourages them to read along with more challenging books that they may not even attempt to read on their own. A listening center would make a great new addition to my classroom and to my students' education. It will allow them to read either independently, with a partner or in small groups. The students will be eager to read and will give them the confidence to tackle more challenging books. The Califone Spirit Listening Center can be found in the Calloway House catalog or at www.callowayhouse.com.
