My goal as a second grade teacher at a low-income school is to provide students with hands-on experiences with learning that are disguised as games. I am asking for materials to continue to build our learning stations. The social studies photo library exposes students to many cultural traditions, people, and sights from around the world. The 260+ photos come in a photo box to browse and are just a bit bigger than 4 x 6 photos. Each photo contains a description on the back. Also for our social studies station, Reading Roadway U.S.A. can be played to gain greater familiarity with the U.S and increase literacy skills. Take Four is a fast paced word building game like a crossword puzzle, and Word for Word Phonics Game has students building words using Reading Rods and can be played at multiple levels for reading and word-building skills. Chunk Stacker uses frequently used onsets and rimes to build words. Zingo! is played with tiles and game boards like bingo. The tiles include a picture of the object along with the word to gain reinforcement with common objects, sounds, and spelling patterns. There is even a phonics game with an Egyptian theme. The students are going to love these! Last but not least, a reproducible book, Sight Words Manipulatives for Reading Success, is included for me to create hands-on manipulatives for students needing extra practice. These could be used at the desk during non-center time and could also be taken home for additional support. These manipulatives would travel much lighter! Please consider this additional learning excitement and fun for our classroom. These centers would strengthen fundamental language skills and provide critical grade-appropriate reading skills.
