I teach at a public high school in Washington, DC. Our school has a wonderfully dedicated staff that works tirelessly every day to build a warm, safe, and academically challenging environment for our students. One of my ongoing goals is to raise awareness in our school and community about the importance of art education. I refer to my classroom as "the studio" and to my students as "artists" because I want everyone who enters our classroom to view art making as an endeavor that deserves time, energy, and brain power. My students are incredible. They are bright, capable, and resilient. Many of them have never been exposed to in-depth, content-rich art education but they are already so eager to create, so deeply focused on sharing their story through their work.
