I am the only science teacher at a small school, and as such, I am responsible for using a very small budget to purchase supplies for science classes from grades 7 through 11. I have several students who are interested in pursuing careers in the medical field after high school, and I have obtained my principal's blessing to teach an AP Biology course next year. As of the end of the school year we had 13 juniors and seniors signed up for this advanced elective. These are all students who have completed the required high school science courses and are interested in getting college credit for first year biology by scoring well on the AP Exam in May. The only problem is that there are 12 required labs for AP Biology that I do not have money to purchase the supplies for. It would take almost my entire yearly budget to purchase the supplies for these 12 labs, which would take supplies away from all the other classes that I teach. My students have expressed to me how excited they are to be taking AP Biology in the fall, even though I have warned them that, being a college course, it will be challenging. They are up to the challenge and I would hate to have to take it away from them because of a lack of supplies for these labs. Although some materials will be used up during the year, the majority of the kit is reusable from year to year. The refill packages (to replace the consumables) will be much easier for me to purchase with my measly budget than the entire lab kit. So in essence, your donation for my students this year will continue to help students for years to come.
This project will reach 13 students.
