Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Sticks & stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you." I don't know who started that myth, but dispelling it is my goal. Words do hurt & their pain lingers. Victims of bullies have been told to 'tough it out', 'turn the other cheek', or 'just avoid them'. Not in my classroom!
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Because this is typically my students' first school experience, everything is new. They are the blank slates that present me, the teacher, with a unique opportunity. I can influence behavior before it becomes negative instead of battling to undo established habits.
My Project
Having already received a complimentary copy of "Bullying in Schools", I will use it to develop a Pre-Kindergarten unit to combat bullying while promoting diversity. Because Parent Involvement is an important component of SRLDP, I'll incorporate the topics of bullying and diversity into my Parent Education curriculum. I'd like additional copies of "Bullying in Schools" so they may utilize them during class or check out for further reading at home.
The library of literature about bullying will complement and enrich my directed lessons. Stories that present different scenarios will engage my students, promote discussion, and reinforce the target concepts. Paper, pencils, and crayons in a wide array of skin colors will allow children to accurately and proudly represent themselves in art activities.
For too long, bullying has been regarded as the victim's burden to bear, which has only emboldened the bully.
Art materials that promote confidence through diversity will combat the individual insecurities that often lead to acts of intolerance towards others. Beginning with "Bullying in Schools", a thoughtful curriculum for both students & parents can be developed & implemented for everyone's benefit. The tragic results of bullying are heartbreaking & I say, "Bullies Beware! Not In Our Pre-K!"
