This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every day we start out with our mantras, , "Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean.", "Take the "t" out of can't and yes you can", and "Familia means...Family." We say these together every day to create a family atmosphere in my class.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds.
Some are exposed to reading and some are not. I have a lot of reluctant learners. I have to undo 6 years of "I hate school and I hate reading" by the time they come to me. It is very difficult to get my students to read at home because of the technological age they live in. By talking up books the way I do, it makes even the most reluctant student want to try.
My students aren't exposed to reading like I was. Getting a young boy, who is exposed to the streets to read is a challenge but my students, even my boys, want to read based upon how I talk about the books. Turning them into lifelong readers is my ultimate goal. The more they read, then the better prepared they are for the world around them!
My Project
This project will help my students become lifelong readers. I can't expose them enough to great books. This project will help my students enjoy reading. Reading doesn't have to be boring or redundant. It can be fun and relaxing. I want my students more than anything to love to read! I want to expose them to new topics and authors they've never tried before. My ultimate goal is to have my students discussing books they want to read with each other. By giving them the books they want and encouraging them to read, I can only hope to accomplish this goal.
