I work in Stamford Connecticut, a suburb of New York City that has its own active business center. Stamford is a diverse city, there are 68 different languages spoken here and 52% of students qualify for the federal/reduced-price lunch program. Stamford is also a large city with 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools. Many of my students are faced with challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Despite this, every morning they walk in with a positive attitude and the desire to succeed.
My classroom consists of 18 amazing and unique individuals that reflect the diversity of the city that they live in.
It is my ultimate goal is to prepare these students for the 21st century. I want them to become responsible, respectful, and safe citizens of the community. They have the power to be successful, but need to be empowered to achieve success.
My Project
I am interested in modifying my classroom environment to meet the needs of a growing population within my classroom. Students who need to move are increasing and our requirements for stillness are also increasing. The current static environment, where children are asked to remain still and seated for long periods of time, is not only difficult for most children it is impossible for some children. For some learners it may look like fidgeting, nervously kicking or even wrapping themselves around desks. These students are using a tremendous amount of energy trying to remain still, rather than using the same energy to focus on the content.
In order to provide some alternatives for children I would like to incorporate a variety of different seating and desk options in my classroom.
These wobble chairs allow for the sensory output that some students need. The wobble chairs will provide students with an appropriate non-disruptive way to release their energy. In addition, there are stools so that students can take their work and choose where they will best focus. Instead of a student only being able to work at their desk, they will have a stronger voice in where and how they choose to work.
