My Students
I have the privilege and responsibility to be working with many of Polytechnic's best students who are accepting the challenge of the AP Chemistry test. I have an extremely intelligent and already decorated group of students that halfway through high school have earned scholarships, internships with the superintendent and are part of all the governing councils of the school.
My students are eager to learn, so much that there was a need to open a second AP chemistry class and I would like to do everything in my power to help them succeed in their various aspirations.
Our school is mainly a Title I school with over 80% of the students receiving free lunch. It is also predominantly Latinx population exceeding 95%. About half of the students are taking Advanced Placement classes for the first time.
My Project
I am a first time AP Chemistry teacher and really want to give my students the opportunity to be scientist. Spectrophotometry is one of the most used practices to identify chemicals as each element gives off a unique spectral signature. It also highlights quantum electron orbitals that produce the spectral signatures.
Using the spectrophotometer the students are able to see first hand how all chemicals absorb light and how it can be used to identify and calculate the concentration of solution using Beer's Law.
Because it is so fundamental to chemistry it is a big component of the AP test. I want my students to have experience using the lab equipment so that they can understand the full context of were the data comes from, how to manipulate data and troubleshoot the lab procedure, all aspects of the AP Chemistry test. We will use this to teach about the Atoms structure, quantum numbers, chemical identification, reaction rates, and solution concentrations (using Beer's Law).
