Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Montessori Lower Elementary classroom is part of a public K-12 charter school. Students in our class come from a richly diverse background and they truly enjoy learning and harnessing their understanding of being citizens of the Universe. The multi-age classroom of children ages 6-9 makes for a beautiful dance of learning, mentorship, and community building. Third graders love to mentor the younger students, and the younger students look up to the older students as leaders. It creates a wonderful sense of community and encourages students to think outside themselves for the good of all.
Children in our class enjoy having the knowledge of the Universe at their fingertips and discovering how we are all interconnected.
The light of imagination, wonder, and understanding through their learning is palpable! Students in our classroom are tactile learners, problem solvers, global citizens, critical thinkers, and genuinely caring spirits. They have a love for learning because they are able to, quite literally, put their learning in their own hands.
An added bonus is that I get the joy of learning alongside and growing with these students for 3 years! It is a truly unique opportunity to be part of their formative years.
My Project
A love for books is fostered at an early age, and a love for reading begins in the lower elementary grades. While some of the younger students in our Montessori Lower Elementary class (grades 1-3) are not quite reading fluently, it doesn't stop them from picking up a good book! And what a joy it would bring to them to be able to enjoy a good book as they listen to a narrator bring it to life. Our "freedom within limits" belief in the Montessori classroom is honored in this model, giving the emergent reader access (freedom) while also requiring that they respect and care for the materials (limits) so that others can enjoy them just the same.
By donating to our project, you'll be giving the gift of accessible storytelling and confidence to our emerging readers.
This will allow them to follow along and practice reading classic stories, leveled readers, and culturally representative stories that will fuel their love for reading for years to come.
