I teach students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. As a Special Education Teacher, They learn best by hands-on teaching practices as well as direct instruction. Many are nonverbal or have trouble putting sentences together in order to effectively communicate.
Although they are different and have individual struggles, they have the hopes and dreams of all students their age.
To simply fit in and find their place in this world. I believe my main job is not to discover what they can't do, but what they can!
My Project
This year I have been asked to teach both Math and an Art class. In order to aid my students in Math, I require a number of new calculators. l also need toner cartridge for my personal printer in order to differentiate the math problems to the student's current skill level. In Art, we will be looking at some of the most iconic cartoon characters of all time. Would you believe that many young people have no idea who is Popeye or Woody Woodpecker? The art supplies and the toner will allow us to print off coloring pages of our Saturday morning heroes and explore that part of pop culture. With your help, my students will begin to understand why the 50th anniversary of Scooby-Doo is such an accomplishment!
