Help me give my students summer activity books to maintain their current level of success, review skills, and strategies, and to prevent the Summer Slide!
I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in our rural elementary school in upstate New York. Our school has a student population of 350 students in grades K-5 and many qualify for reading intervention services daily. These students are at risk of not meeting grade-level expectations are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, with a large percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
Many of the students at our school qualify for free and reduced lunch, health, and mental health services through community partnerships and our school's weekly backpack program which includes food for students and their family. A percentage of our students and families also struggle to maintain housing and are considered homeless within our district.
My students are eager, young, innovative, and compassionate learners who work hard on a daily basis. Our students are both sympathetic and empathetic to classmates creating a safe and loving learning environment.
My Project
My students have worked so hard all year long to work on their reading skills and strategies and to build a strong reading foundation. The summer bridge activity books will help prevent the 'summer slide' by providing a structured routine of review for each day during the summer break. These materials will allow my students to work with parents/guardians to review daily reading skills and strategies during the summer. The reading team and I work hard to instill confidence in our readers and to create independent life-long learners that are inquisitive and eager to maintain their current level of success.
