Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hard-working, bright, young individuals. They attend school each and every day, ready to learn, and meet all high expectations. My students love challenges and face difficulties each and every day with smiles on their faces.

My students come from a Title I school with a high population of English learners.

Most come from low-income households and have limited resources and experiences. For many of my students, their only chance of life-enriching activities are at school. They love school, and I want to make this place the most enriching place for them!

My Project

My students love watching TED Talks. It's become a ritual in our class; at the end of the day, we watch a clip of TED Talks on various topics. Some students go home and return the next day as just another day, but some students, come back with more questions, ideas, or even information they've researched about the topic of our video.

My students will use the power of voice to show their expertise in STEM; science, technology, engineering, math, and innovation.

A few of my students had an idea, however. Rather than watching TED Talks, they wanted to have their own! Students will take turns, selecting a STEM topic of their choice. They'll be able to choose from anything that was taught and built in class, to whatever interests them. Using a rubric provided, students will create their presentation, which will require students to delve deeper into their topic, becoming experts! They will also include take pictures, videos, and create demonstrations to model for the class to help each other understand their STEM topic. After students create their presentation, we will hold our very own TED Talks to the class! To make it more official, we are asking for 2 microphones, bluetooth speakers, a presentation clicker for our computer, along with batteries and accessories for the clicker.

Students are already abuzz thinking of what they'd like to present; Science of Slime, Understanding Direct Currents, Strawberry DNA Extractions, and Can You Code, are some examples already shared with me! I am excited to see that students come up with the science behind all the "trending" fun!

Please give my students the voice to share STEM "Ideas Worth Sharing!"
