My Students

Our students come from a low income neighborhood with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lack of opportunities where visual and performing arts experiences are few and far between. We try our best to supplement this through cultural institutions and seeing local performances. Last year, our students were fortunate enough to be chosen to be a part of Disney Musicals in Schools where among the many benefits that came with the program, they were able to go to Broadway and see Aladdin the Musical! For many, it was their first experience being in the audience of a live performance, and for all, it was their first time on Broadway.

We have seen the growth that musical theater offers our children in public speaking, collaboration, socialization, creativity, and confidence.

It has helped to give English Language Learners and Special Needs children a voice.

My Project

This project will help to bring to life the characters, props, and sets for our musical theater program! Not only will these craft materials help to enhance the visual component of our performances, but they inspire the students currently in the program by seeing a design come to life. It also fosters the sustainability of our program and the success of musical theater in our school by inspiring younger students that will be interested in the program in the future! Just after last year's completion of Aladdin, students below and above grades 3-5 expressed interest in the program and gave their compliments to the production design, costumes, and props used. Parents expressed willingness to donate materials and time to help in the future and were so proud of the work their children put in to produce something that was so foreign to them. It really brought our community together and we hope that it will be a beloved tradition in our school going forward.

Our goal is to make this program sustainable, and with your help, we can begin to fill our school with materials that will build community, love for musical theater, and a sustainable program that runs on its own!
