Help me give my students a variety of short but interesting reading material. My classes are full of reluctant and low readers, but they love to hunt and fish.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to help them develop an interest in school and learning. All my students are below grade level in reading and are struggling in their classes. Many have disabilities and have trouble focusing for longer than a few minutes. Education is not a priority in many of their homes and education isn't valued.
My Project
My students are reluctant to read longer stories, but still enjoy learning about new and interesting topics. My boys have a love for hunting and fishing. They spend all their afternoons and weekends in the woods enjoying these activities. Having some new hunting and fishing magazines will really give them some interesting articles to read. Not only would they enjoy the stories but they would also learn about different types of equipment and techniques that they could put to use.
Reading about a lot of different types of facts and trivia is something my students truly love.
They will spend hours pouring over the world record books and trivia books. Many times this will lead them to want to find out more information about the topic. It is always exciting to see them want to search and learn more about something that interests them. It is not your typical type of reading and research, but it works for my kids.
