Design, Build, Test, Sell... Repeat!

Help me give my students makerspace materials so they can design, prototype, and create final products (cardboard, glue guns, cutting materials) as well as develop an advertising campaign (screen-printing materials) to launch their products!

My Students

Students at my innovative high school chose to accelerate their learning experience by enrolling in college courses at the same time. "Read, write, think, and talk. In every class. Every day." That's the motto our school lives by. The learning is active and engaging! Most of our students are first-generation college students, and some will be first-generation high school graduates. If not for the opportunity to attend our school, many students would not be able to go to college at all.

Students do well while at our school, but after they graduate, many find they lack the confidence to continue learning at a 4-year institution or to work in their chosen career field.

This project seeks to provide a dedicated space and materials where students can identify a problem in the community, brainstorm and design possible solutions, prototype and revise, and finally launch the most effective solutions to real-world problems in our community.

My Project

My students leave their high school experience with a lot of "book smarts" but very little "work smarts." They often struggle when trying to transfer their classroom success to the real world. They have the skills but lack the confidence because they have done little improvising and exploring in trying to solve a problem.

As my school moves to a project-based learning framework, students will have more opportunities to work with hands-on problem solving, which increases their employability upon graduation.

A makerspace provides students with the materials they need to design a new product, to meet a specific need, or to model an abstract phenomenon. With the cardboard, cutting mats, and adhesives, students will be able to make prototypes of their products, which they can test, revise, and retest. Once their product is viable, they can use screenprinting materials to launch a variety of advertising campaigns in order to gain a wider audience.

We have a dedicated space to establish a school-wide makerspace, where students from all grade levels will be able to utilize and benefit from its resources. This project is just the first step toward making a larger, broader version of a makerspace. Ultimately, the space will address the technical and communication skills needed for students to be successful in careers available in our rural community.
