Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Are we in nature?" While I take my little scientists to our small schoolyard as much as possible, nothing can compare to being completely immersed in a local ecosystem on trails, away from the sights and sounds of city life.
For many of my students, scientific investigation and hands-on exploration may be the spark that inspires success in not only school, but life as well.
I teach a class of energetic 3rd graders in a charter school whose mission is that all students can succeed. My students are part of a high need community - the majority are of low income, and as children of immigrants, 88% speak English as a second language.
Living in their community, many of my students spend their after school hours sitting indoors because it is too dangerous to play outside. Consequently, most of my students have very little exposure to science and nature. Therefore, it is vital that they receive this exposure at school.
Unfortunately, being a charter school, we do not have the funding to send my students on field trips such as the one that I am proposing.
My Project
In an effort to take science learning outdoors, I discovered a local habitat that would be perfect to take my "city kids" on an educational adventure. I would love to introduce my students to the enormous diversity of life that can be found outdoors right in their own community. It is my hope to stir excitement for the outdoors, and inspire them to revisit this amazing safe haven in their community. While visiting the park, students will hike the trails and explore wooded areas, a river, and even a beaver pond. We plan to create field journals for students to record their observations using drawings and words. We also plan to bring along sampling equipment to explore the wonderful organisms that live in the waterways. This field trip will open up a whole new world to my students and will be part of an interdisciplinary unit of study that involves math, reading, Spanish, and writing, as well as science.
Your generous donation will unlock a door and provide one-of-a-kind experiences and opportunities for a wonderful group of eager learners.
