My students live in a neighborhood in Arkansas that has a combination of low income and middle-income families. The families our school serves place a high value on education and are eager to have their children come to our school. Students are excited to come to school each day to learn. In my classroom, I balance planning developmentally appropriate, rigorous learning through hands-on experiences and play. We are getting ready for success in school, work, and life. Together we laugh, play and learn.
My Project
Kindergarten students begin to learn basic economic principles when they use concepts such as needs and wants in their play and discussions. Through our Kinder Blocks projects, as we learn about economics, students will then design and create structures that we need like houses, bridges and roads. Next we will design items that we want like castles, cars and robots. Understanding the difference between wants and needs is the first step to becoming financially literate in life.
Through blocks, students use imaginations to plan and create designs with friends.
When children play with blocks their self esteem improves as they bring their ideas to life. Kindergartners use math skills such as length, measurement and symmetry. Blocks offer students a chance to test hypothesis and build scientific reasoning skills.
Students will have the chance help design future cities to meet our wants and needs. We will use Young Architects Design Blocks - Master Set to design future houses and buildings. Slot-A-Shape Builders Bristle Builders will be used to create wants such as toys, robots and roller coasters. 3-D Slot Builders and Smart Builder Straws will give students opportunities to plan and conduct investigations surrounding wants and needs. As Walt Disney said, "If you can dream it, you can do it."
