This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Established in 1979, our school provides educational and support services for children with hearing or vision loss in the MCP School System. Some of the students have additional challenges that magnify the impact of the vision or hearing loss. Each of the students has special needs and requires extensive technology and assistance to succeed in a school setting.
Students attend classes at one of three locations: the elementary campus, middle, or high school.
In addition, itinerant services are provided throughout Mobile County for students whose disability is not severe enough to require full-time placement at one of the campuses. Services are also provided in several area counties.
My Project
As a speech therapist who serves sensory impaired students, providing hands on materials is essential!
Who says that Science only belongs in Science class?
These materials will provide wonderful hands on learning.
My students are primarily language delayed due to their sensory impairment (vision or hearing loss.) These materials will allow my students to learn valuable STEM vocabulary, lessons, and communication that will help them succeed in their classroom and life!
The microscope will allow my students a new way to look at bugs. We will address parts-to-a-whole (i.e. wings, legs, body, antenna) and many other valuable language lessons.
The bug habitat and lady bug habitat will allow my students to see live insects and provide unlimited communication opportunities.
The outdoor insect habitat will be placed in our outdoor garden. This will help my students generalize the STEM vocabulary and names of the insects into the real world. Being able to walk outside and see what we have talked about will only increase their excitement about STEM!
The bugs in the kitchen game will be used as a reward and fun way to increase their receptive and expressive language in the form of a board game.
STEM can be taught across all areas in school. These fun tools will help my students learn amazing new lessons about bugs in a variety of formats!
