Custodians Of The Ocean! Reef Tank Supplies For Young Scientists

My students need the supplies necessary to maintain high-quality salt water for our tropical reef tank. The Reverse Osmosis Water Filter, along with other filtration supplies, allows us to keep our tank happy and healthy!

My Students

We have a dedicate group of young people who want to better understand their planet so they may become stewards of this Earth. These high-schoolers are learning first hand how ecosystems function- the stability of complex systems and also the fragility of it all. By responding to fluctuations in the abiotic conditions in our 65 gallon reef tank, these students ensure that our mini-ecosystem supports all of its inhabitants. Our students come to know and love these creatures that are otherwise so distant to them. They come to understand that the world's oceans are in danger due to changes in Earth's systems and begin getting involved with ways they can help reduce their own impact. Our students are practicing scientists, conservationists, and global citizens.

My Project

Our school is dedicated to maintaining a healthy tropical reef tank for the benefit of young scientists and global citizens. By increasing the volume of our tank and its filtration capacity, we are better simulating a natural ecosystem. Natural ecosystems have the capacity to cleanse the waters in a way that a closed tank system does not. As such, students take on the role of fulfilling ecosystem services to ensure the health of the living community.

Through this experience, students learn first hand the many interactions between the biotic and abiotic world, the reality of nutrient cycles, and the fragility of ecosystems in the face of change.

Your help in providing us with increased filtration allows us to provide our tank inhabitants with high water quality. High water quality allows our tank to flourish and the diversity of life in our tank to increase. As the complexity of our tank begins to mimic a natural ecosystem, there is less fluctuation in the water parameters, which further demonstrates ecosystem services.

These filtration items will be utilized throughout the display tank and the sump/refugium we are building. The Reverse Osmosis Water Filter along with the Reef Salt allows us to provide our tank inhabitants with the nutrients they need and nothing they don't need. That level of control over our water parameters allows us to support the biodiversity and longevity of our system. We thank you so much for your contribution to the learning that is going on at our little New England school. And we thank you for your contribution to the education of young scientists, conservationists, and global citizens!
