Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at DES are enthusiastic readers, writers, mathematicians, and learners. Many arrive early every morning before the bell even rings to get extra support, tutoring, and individualized attention or stay after school for enrichment opportunities such as gardening or coding. They take responsibility for their learning and have established a culture of risk-taking and respect for one another.
What amazes me about DES students is their persevere when presented with difficult tasks.
They are not the type to give up or wait for the teacher to give them an answer. Instead, they exhibit the strength, grit, curiosity, and determination to solve any problem.
My Project
Our school has a dedicated staff of professionals that are working together to close the achievement gap. Grade level teams meet weekly with the campus Literacy Specialist to review student data and plan effective and engaging lessons to meet the needs of their diverse learners. "The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading" is a fantastic resource that will strengthen the literacy routines in each and every classroom in our school and meet the needs of our diverse population. This book provides teachers with the planning and instructional tools necessary to implement rigorous, developmentally appropriate instruction.
This new resource will undoubtedly support our desire to increase the effectiveness of our classroom instruction and accelerate our student's reading growth.
As a PLC (Professional Learning Community), we will use the book weekly to further develop our understanding of text level complexity and student needs.
We will also use our video recording devices to record our small group instruction and engage in peer observations/collaborations to improve our own pedagogy. This resource will support our efforts to grow our expertise which will ultimately lead to higher student reading proficiency.
