My Students

As the librarian at a rural, public, Pre-k-2 elementary school I aim to give my students access to creative and meaningful learning experiences which will foster a life long love of reading.

My students are clever, courageous learners hungering for the chance to take their learning to the next level.

As a rural public school my students are as diverse socioeconomically as they are adventurous academically. At this time about 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch from the school district.

Providing these students with access to high tech, real world learning experiences is key to closing the gap between the children who have access and exposure to these opportunities outside of school and those that do not. This project will challenge their minds, excite their spirits and foster a sense of community through adventurous creation.

My Project

Making classroom movies has gotten much easier and more accessible now that cellphones, tablets and other digital devices feature video capabilities that are high quality and easy to use. Green Screens are a great way to allow students to explore digital storytelling and media creation using these devices to create some really awesome, professional looking products. Even as young as the age of 5, I have found that many students are familiar with the technology of a green screen, even the photography professionals our school hired for school pictures this year used one! They are used in the movies to make it look like the actors are driving across the desert, or sailing on the ocean and used on TV to make it look like your local news announcer is standing in front of an animated weather map.

Our students love to use video, It's a format they understand and that sparks their creativity.

By giving them access to a high quality visually pleasing and exciting technology we are also opening up their minds to whole new levels of what they are capable of. Here are just a few examples of some of the awesome projects our students will have the opportunity to engage in!

Readers Theater: Acting out favorite stories. This encourages proper inflection smf interaction with text.

Make a book trailer: design a movie style trailer highlighting characters and summarizing a favorite book.

Digital Storytelling: A fun format for students to share about their lives or retell a favorite story. Allowing them to practice key concepts of literacy including summarizing and comprehension.

Make a how to video: Kids practice their informative writing skills by making short stories about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, ride a bike, or play a game.
