My students need seeds, soil, and containers to plant them in, along with tools to help grow their herbs and vegetables, along with books to share on growing and cooking them for some hands on science!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students don't have internet access at home. They don't have iPhones, and they have never been told they can be innovative. My students have plenty working against them but are really only lacking inspiration. Every student loves learning when it is delivered in a hands-on, exciting way. That's where I come in.
Above all else, I want to inspire my students to see that they can become engineers, programmers, artists, writers, scientists, or anything they can dare to want to become.
Our students are nearly all living in poverty and many are English learners. Rather than lower my expectations, I want to be the one who pushes them, who expects more of them, who not only believes they can succeed but expects it.
My Project
My students are innovative and curious, and despite being disadvantaged by growing up in the neighborhood they do, they want better and want to learn, grow, and have meaningful learning experiences. To that end, I came up with a new way to expand their science and homework experiences through gardening.
Students will plant an herb and a vegetable of their choice in class, which they will take home to grow and cultivate, taking careful notes to compare to the one we will grow in the classroom.
Not only will this project empower students to make decisions and follow through with them, but it strengthens their scientific understand of how plants grow in a given environment. My students will approach this homework project through the lens of hands on scientific learning, but in the process will learn how easy it can be to grow vegetables at home.
For families who struggle to keep food on the table, this added element of providing fresh vegetables will hopefully help to inspire my students to want to help their families by using their scientific knowledge to expand and maintain their own home gardens. With shareable books to help give advice on growing, cultivating, and cooking their herbs and vegetables, students will get so much from this experience.
