My students, 9th-12th grade, come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Approximately 65% of our student population is on free & reduced lunch. Our population also has an above state average number of students with an IEP. Serving rural Oklahoma also means we have a high number of Native American student artists.
In spite of economic hardships, family splits and a huge alcohol/drug problem in our community, students still get on the bus and get involved, are creative, and quietly working out their problems by expressing themselves through art making.
Our high school also sponsors an Art Club for students who aren't enrolled in a class but still want to exercise their creativity.
My Project
We will be sculpting dynamic busts of running horses. These nearly life sized sculptures will draw the viewer's attention while on exhibit in two of our community bank lobbies. The sculptures will be accompanied by a description of War Bonnet Equine Rescue and their efforts to promote humane treatment of Oklahoma horses.
Students will use sculpture clay, tools and pigment, sculpting nearly life sized busts to communicate the natural beauty of these regal animals, expressing the need to honor them and care for them with adequate nutrition and medicine.
Prior to the project, students will listen to a presentation given by the Rescue Society. Next, students will complete a dynamic bust sculpture of a running horse. Finally, to summarize the project, students will complete a response page answering questions about the art making process and the feelings that they experienced helping raise awareness for Equine Rescue by exhibiting their art works.
