Our school is located in a rural district. The majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school seeks to provide these students with the tools they need to flourish.
In my music room, students come together to work as a team.
When we create music together, students are motivated and excited to challenge themselves. When reading, creating, and practicing music they work together as a group. I love helping my students build positive relationships with each other.
My Project
When I first introduced ukuleles to my elementary students, they were thrilled and this enthusiasm has continued to grow. We currently have five ukuleles for our 3rd-4th grade classes to use, which means my students have learned a lot about taking turns and sharing. They have also been introduced to a new culture and way of making music.
My students are so excited to learn a stringed instrument, and they frequently come practice in their free time or during recess.
With the addition of five more ukuleles, roughly half of each class group will have a ukulele, which means students can learn in pairs. For the majority of my students, who don't have the resources to purchase musical instruments at home, the opportunity to play the ukulele with their friends can open new doors of creativity.
Watching my students work together to make music is incredibly rewarding they concentrate, learn together, and problem solve - just like solving a puzzle. The ukulele is a new tool for my students to explore, and to continue growing their love of music, creativity, and teamwork.
