Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Social studies has always been my passion. Throughout my whole life, I have loved learning about distant and faraway lands. I have seen that students also love being taken to faraway places without leaving their seats.
My students are mainly ninth and tenth grade English language learners from Latin America and the Middle East.
Despite coming from all over the globe, they have arrived with very little knowledge of the lands that previously surrounded them. I am hoping to open them up to the world around them and in the process, make the world seem smaller and friendlier to them. My school is in a working class community in Northern New Jersey.
I am also the coach of Academic Decathalon, composed of thirty-five students who compete against other schools in tests of knowledge, public speaking and writing. We meet every Monday and Thursday for practice.
My Project
The Academic Decathalon is looking to host the families for a night of celebration. The students want to show their parents what they have been working on, so their families understand exactly what goes into being a part of Academic Decathalon Varsity Competition Team.
By having the families seeing each student's area of focus, they will be better able to support them at home and on the weekends with their studies.
This project is for water and granola bars to give out during the family engagement night. Other food will be brought by the families in a pot luck style.
