Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach art in a densely populated and ethnically diverse city where nearly all of my students come from low income families. They are the happiest, funniest, and most surprising group of young people you will ever meet. Almost all of my students speak Spanish at home and they are patient with me and my terrible Espanol! Many of my students are English language learners, some of whom have recently arrived in the United States.
I am constantly amazed by my students' inexhaustible enthusiasm about making anything.
They are happier with a piece of white paper and a #2 pencil than most kids would be about an iPad. But they deserve more than just paper and pencils and I would like to give them diverse experiences in art class.. with your help!
My Project
My students are so grateful for the 37 minutes of art in their week but I would like to push past the 2-D pencil and paper work that we have been doing and start connecting 3D thinking with the "Straws and Connectors". This kind of exercise looks like fun but is actually engineering! The "Nature print paper" will connect art concepts like composition and space with science. The paper uses a chemical reaction activated by the sun to make an image! My students will be so excited by this "art work" that is really a science experiment! Finally, I would like to give some of my older students the opportunity to do an exciting art project with printmaking while they are still in elementary school. I hope this kind of project will keep them interested in art and how art is all over the world if you know where to look for it!
