Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In their own words, "Just because I am a girl, doesn't mean I can't play basketball and baseball as well as anyone else." "Just because I am African-American doesn't mean that I'm loud, rude, or a bad person." "Just because I'm shy doesn't mean I don't have great ideas."
Our students represent the ethnic, economic, language, and religious diversity of East Oakland.
We know that learning can only take place when a strong foundation of community and love is established. Grounded in the philosophy of restorative justice, all students are known and loved.
My Project
In this political climate, we need religious tolerance and understanding more than ever. I am asking for ten Digital Voice Recorders/ MP3 Players. I plan to have my students learn about Islam and experiences of Muslim and Arab Americans, and then tell their stories through learning how to interview and write profile pieces.
Through storytelling, we build human connections that are stronger than hate.
I know that after having the opportunity to connect across difference, our students will go forward with more empathy and as champions of people who face oppression and hate.
